The Sustainable Circuits Index of 2023 has been released by Enovation Consulting
Enovation Consulting, a leading FIA environmentally-accredited and B Corp-certified specialist sports and sustainability agency founded by Dr. Cristiana Pace, have released 2023’s Sustainable Circuits Index (SCI).
The SCI is part of the Sustainable Motorsport Index, a family of indexes developed by Enovation Consulting in collaboration with Professor Paolo Taticchi, Professor of Strategy and Sustainability at UCL School of Management. As the sole global performance system assessing motorsport stakeholders’ sustainability practices against the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) framework, the Index reveals how major motorsports circuits are performing in terms of sustainability and disclosure.
After a continual focus on enhancing sustainability measures both operationally and strategically, Mugello Circuit has been named the most sustainable motorsport circuit. This year’s SCI saw Mugello Circuit and Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya switch places once again. The two tracks have been improving practices and competing for first place since the original SCI in 2021.
Cementing its place as the number one circuit, Mugello has introduced several initiatives over the last year in its commitment to sustainability. To reduce common air pollutants, 4,000 metres of eco-active and antibacterial ceramic slabs have been installed. As well as that, green space measuring 120 hectares has been protected and will capture an approximate equivalent of 3,600 tonnes of carbon dioxide.
Mugello currently hosts annual events for MotoGP and smaller Grand Prix motorcycle racing classes. Owned by Scuderia Ferrari since 1988, the track has also been used for Formula 1 testing.
Fourth in the ranking, Silverstone Circuit received acclamation from Enovation Consulting. Its SCI score was improved by 29 points, earning its place as 2023’s most improved circuit. This staggering score increase comes after accomplishments such as its partnership with local charities to redistribute surplus food and the installation of over 2,700 solar panel modules, providing more than 13% of the site’s annual power requirements.
Dr. Cristiana Pace, Founder and CEO of Enovation Consulting, said: “Sustainability in sport is at a crucial inflection point; progress is being made rapidly and the circuits that position themselves as future-facing innovators are setting the agenda, driving change, and harvesting the rewards. Conversely, the laggards have to play catch-up in the face of increasingly loud calls from championships, teams, and fanbases to explain their lack of engagement.
“There is so much to celebrate in this year’s Index, and circuits just starting out on their journey towards a sustainable future should take the opportunity to explore the range of ways they can enhance their ESG credentials and support global efforts towards decarbonisation.”
