EXPERTISE
An Unconventional Route to Formula 1: The son of double World Champion Graham Hill, Damon began racing later than many of his peers. Funding his career while working as a dispatch rider, he progressed through motorcycles, Formula Ford, Formula 3 and Formula 3000, supplementing his experience with success in touring cars, endurance racing and winning the Saab Championship.
Rise with Williams: Damon joined Williams Racing as a test driver in 1991 before becoming a reserve driver in 1992 and making his Formula 1 debut at the British Grand Prix. During his first full season in 1993, Damon delivered three wins and third place in the Drivers’ Championship, followed by six victories in 1994 as the team rallied after the tragic loss of Ayrton Senna.
World Championship Success: After finishing runner-up in the Drivers’ Championship in both 1994 and 1995, Damon reached the peak of his career in 1996. With eight wins from 16 races, nine pole positions and 10 podium finishes, he secured the Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship at the Japanese Grand Prix. Damon then raced for Arrows in 1997 before joining Jordan Grand Prix, where he delivered the team’s first-ever Formula 1 victory at the 1998 Belgian Grand Prix, leading a historic 1–2 finish. His 22 Grand Prix victories place him among the most successful drivers in Formula 1 history.
Broadcasting and Leadership: After retiring from Formula 1 in 1999, Damon moved into business and leadership roles, succeeding Sir Jackie Stewart as President of the British Racing Drivers’ Club. From 2012 to 2024, Damon was a key member of the Sky Sports F1 broadcasting team, providing unique insights to global audiences.
