Recovery Drive: Turning Setbacks into Strengths

Resilience, relentlessness and composure under pressure.

Ahead of the Mexico City Grand Prix, all the talk was around Max Verstappen’s championship resurgence; how his and Red Bull Racing’s recent run of form had catapulted them back into the hunt against the McLarens of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. A two-way inter-team scrap suddenly had an interloper.

We all enjoy a close title fight – it's what storylines and compelling narratives are made of – but when the pressure is on, those who can stay focused are the ones who will reap the rewards. Norris was the one who remained composed in Mexico, rewriting the championship script once again by stamping his own authority on the championship chase with a dominant – in fact, crushing performance – that saw him vault into the lead with four rounds remaining.

It was a drive that could define the championship.

The ability of F1 drivers and teams to dig deep when the pressure is on highlights just why the sport has such parallels to the real world. It stems from a relentless hunger to win but that requires all facets of the team to be performing in synchronised fashion. Red Bull’s own resurgence – led by the mighty Verstappen – in recent races epitomises that never-give-up spirit that enables teams and drivers to pounce when their rivals have an off weekend.

When asked in a recent interview on The Sports Agent Podcast, David Coulthard said:

“It’s a development race; every team has the target of bringing upgrades of some shape or form to a Grand Prix. It won’t always manifest itself in the form of a new front wing, floor, or something big and obvious. But I think McLaren probably started to turn their heads towards 2026 earlier than they would have thought, because they had a big lead in the Constructors’ Championship and it looked like Red Bull were in turmoil. There have been changes in leadership; Max commented around the time of the Budapest GP that he didn’t think he would win another GP this year. There was a lot of power in the propaganda - a number of focus points shifting - but Red Bull have been relentless. There are a lot of people there that are still working to prove that they still have it… and they certainly appear to still have it.”

Recorded before the Mexico GP, the episode offers valuable insight into how teams like McLaren and Red Bull manage setbacks, refocus, and perform under pressure. Coulthard’s perspective highlights what defines high-performing teams in both sport and business: the ability to stay composed, adapt quickly, and turn early missteps into long-term success.

Crisis management requires calm in the chaos, understanding that early missteps don’t define the outcome. Composure under pressure is a leadership skill that inspires teams to stay focused when results dip. And learning from imperfect starts - whether that involves pivoting to a new strategy, launching a product, or forming a partnership - is what transforms short-term setbacks into long-term resilience.
