Damon Hill – 30 Years as a Formula 1 World Champion

The countdown is on. The 2026 Formula 1 World Championship begins in earnest in Australia in just two months’ time. With new technical regulations expected to shuffle the pack, teams will be facing new challenges in their bids to secure the title.

Reigning Drivers’ World Champion Lando Norris and the constructors’ title-winning McLaren Mastercard Formula 1 Team will start the season with a target on their backs. With debutants Audi and Cadillac joining the grid, the championship landscape is set for one of its most intriguing resets in recent memory.

In securing the 2025 title, Norris became the 11th different British driver to take the crown, adding his name to a prestigious list that includes the likes of Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button, Sir Jackie Stewart, Jim Clark - and two drivers by the name of Hill, Graham and Damon.

Thirty years ago, Damon Hill made history by becoming the first son of a world champion to claim the Formula 1 title himself. In doing so, he carved out his own legacy, overcoming intense scrutiny, fierce rivalry and personal doubt to establish himself as one of Britain’s great racing champions. As the sport looks ahead to a new era, we also mark the 30th anniversary of Damon’s remarkable 1996 World Championship - revisiting the highs, the setbacks, the controversy and the on-track drama that defined one of Formula 1’s most compelling title campaigns.

In the coming weeks, Damon will be discussing his career in conversation with Tom Clarkson – acclaimed host of the official F1 podcast ‘Beyond the Grid’ - on a nine-date UK tour with Fane Productions, partners of Performance Insights.

Damon will share stories from his remarkable Formula 1 journey, from his unconventional late entry into the sport, his battles with Michael Schumacher, and his title-winning success. He will also be discussing modern day F1 and his views on the forthcoming season with a British name defending the crown.

‘An Evening with Damon Hill in Conversation with Tom Clarkson’ begins in Cambridge on Tuesday 13 January and will visit Bath (14th), London’s Barbican (17th), Tunbridge Wells (19th), Guildford (20th), Glasgow (21st), Leicester (27th), Salford (28th) and Newcastle (29th).
